If helping the environment, getting exercise, and saving gas weren’t enough to get you out of your car to bike to work, how does 20 bucks sound?
Thats right, your employer will pay you to bike to work to the tune of an Andrew Jackson every month. The goal of the new legislation is to offset the costs of bicycle purchase, improvement, repair, and storage for regular bike commuters. Here are the details:
Employers may offset the costs of bicycle purchase, improvement, repair, and storage at the rate of $20 per month. Based on how the employer chooses to offer the benefits, the employee may bring receipts to be reimbursed, may sign up for regular monthly payments, or devise some sort of voucher system with their employer.
Bike commuters are not allowed to receive transit or parking benefits in addition to the bike benefit.
The bike commuter benefit can be provided by employers beginning January 1, 2009.
The catch? You just have to bike to work at least 3 times a week!
The League of American Bicyclist has created REIMBURSEMENT cards to help organize the info necessary for you to benefit from the Bicycle Commuter Tax.
