Unemployed and looking for work? Need to polish up that old resume but no one is willing to give you a chance to do so? Well here’s a solution, sorta…. If you don’t mind not getting paid, volunteering is a great way to help your community and to advance yourself as an individual.
I recently came across this volunteering program called Members Project from American Express. Members Project is a website where people can vote for charities, sign up to volunteer, and donate money. Members Project has partnered with TakePart to list volunteering opportunities in one convenient place with organizations such as American Red Cross, Kaiser Permanente, Girl Scouts of America, etc. Volunteering opportunities include english/math tutors, disaster relief aids , youth readers, conservation/restoration projects, food banks, etc.
As an incentive to get you to volunteer, American Express is offering 500 Membership Rewards bonus points (up to 10,000 per year) for every approved hour of volunteer work. 10,000 Membership Rewards points = a $100 giftcard at numerous retailers including Gap, Nike, Victoria’s Secret, Kohls, The Home Depot, etc. Points can also be converted (usually on a 1:1 basis) for many airlines including Air Canada, Airtrans, United Airlines, etc. To find out more about Membership Rewards, visit the American Express Membership Rewards website here.
Now, you don’t have to be an American Express cardmember to participate. If you’re not a cardmember, you can use the points that you accumulate to donate to the charity of your choice. If you are a cardmember, you can choose to donate to a charity of your choice, or redeem the Membership Rewards for items, giftcards, etc.
If you’re in the Los Angeles region, LA Works is a great portal for finding volunteering opportunities. Just register at LA Works, and remember to log your hours at takepart.com/membersproject so you can get your Rewards points.
